I kept wicket once as well...we were playing an inter class game so I wasn't allowed to bowl and batted at the end being in the school team. One batsman hooked the ball and it hit me square on the forehead.

I actually saw stars just like a Beano cartoon.

A lad has joined my team at work and is a wicket keeper. Should I be worried? Seems normally in all other respects of his job

They are different. Nuts. Talk the hind legs off of Donkeys. Must be the centre of everything. Their brains think of nothing else.

If his nickname is "Flipper", he probably isn't very good.

We nick named the Nuthall 2nd XI keeper "Flipper" back in the 90's. Chap called Dave Proudfoot*, lovely bloke, lousy keeper. Some one once described him taking the ball as like watching a sealion clapping. It took a long time before he realised that Flipper was a dolphin, not a sealion, but by then the name had stuck. Unlike most catches.

* I know, feel free to make your own jokes

Genius :)

Crap nicknames based on misassumptions are great. The pub near my office in my last City job was called The Red Herring, but was known to one and all as Le Poulet Rouge because nobody knew the French for herring but Andy Wilson (nice bloke, from Leicester) thought 'poulet' was fish. Once the mistake was revealed the pub became known as CHICKEN OF DEATH
