'Giving it the long handle' always seemed like an odd expression. Though cricket bat sizing was strange altogether.

Third man is an actual fielding position TRO (it's in the MCC Coaching Manual)

On the boundary, off side, behind the slips and gulley region (about 45 degrees)

I hate the current vogue for playing with 'ball in hand' and 'bat in hand', the annoying Mr Vaughn being a particular culprit.

1. We have managed for years to say the same thing without adding 'in hand'.
2. Nothing is happening with 'ball in hand' you numpty. Action requires 'ball out of hand'.
3. Where else were you holding the bat? Lodged where the sun doesn't shine?

I think the lack of cricket or baseball is pushing me over the edge...

Dennis Lillee once famously played "bat out of hand" ;-)

Anyone else get wound up by calling batsmen batters?

Wasn't sure if it had come from the ladies game? I seem to recall the first time I heard it was when Ebony- Rainsford-Boring was boring me to death.

I reckon Batters is Aussie talk, didn't the England Women's team have an Aussie coach back then...

Does anyone else remember the Village Cup final being on telly? It always looked a massed day out on the pop, with food and cricket thrown in for good measure.
