Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

thought I would ask here as a quick google was only giving me US prices....
anyone know how much electricity my wi-fi router uses? Trying to work out whether to get a timer switch for it so it turns off while I am out at work. My laptop charger cable is also plugged into the same socket and is behind the sofa. I guess that the charger cable is going to be the more 'power hungry' item

Modern electronic devices have very low power consumption when not actively working.

Somewhere on it it will say what the power consumption is - and even that will be an upper estimate for when it's working hard. I think ours is about 5-10W, meaning less than 1/4 unit per day.

I always stick a couple of potatoes covered in tinfoil on the barbie after I've finished cooking with it. Pull the lid down and leave for a couple of hours. They taste amazing the next day after reheating in the microwave.

Part of my winter plan is to work more from the office, making sure I charge phone, watch, bike lights and power bank while I'm there.

Also cheekily I'm planning on changing my morning routine, to do a run commute use the shower at work etc. This poses the problem of taking breakfast/ lunch as there are no lockers, pointless saving money on a shower then spending more on buying food as a consequence!

Richm buy food near your place if work on your cool down phase?

My single biggest saving is growing my own food. If it wasn't for coffee, chocolate and bananas, I would not need to buy any food so I often don't go to the shops for months... I bake my own gluten free bread and make my own nut and oat "milk".
I use the oven to heat the house after using it to cook. I cook on gas but the oven is electric.

Most of my electricity use, still below average apparently, is from my greenhouse heater in winter. I must get on with working out a solar panel that powers a floating swimming pool heater that heats a water tank during that day to give off heat at night so I don't have to use the heater so much...

Anyone else pissed off with their water bill?
I collect 4000 litres of rain water for the garden since the winter as opposed to 2500 last year and have really been frugal: washing my hands over a washing up bowl, water from boiling eggs etc all goes in and gets tipped onto trees... Only flush the loo after a pooh etc etc
I consumed a quarter less this last half year, yet, it has gone from £103 to £189 🤬🤬🤬

richmac when I run commute I take light stuff with me or take stuff the day before and leave in work fridge
Anything else is bought at Tesco as my cool down
You may save by showering there in the morning but still have to shower after run home 😂

I see my soup maker being used more soon

Ha ha homeward will be a gentle stroll.

That's a good idea re solar powering a water heater.

Our allotment provides quite a lot, next year there should be a whole lot more.

The thing we need to figure out is storing it without buying equipment or using to much power

About This Thread

Maintained by EvilPixie
With the news (again) being filled with doom and gloom about prices I thought a thread on the topic might be good.

I have seen a few threads about air fryers etc that include comments on cost - yes they are cheaper to run but cost a lot to buy!

But what about the smaller habits.

Bread .... given the cost of fuel is making it cheaper than buying as you have to use the oven? I don't have a smart meter so don't know the cost of heating my oven apart from knowing it will cost elec...
