I clean it on the bread. Although I don't usually have butter.

Sushi.
I only use jam in the middle of my flapjack, which I don’t eat. I’m not telling you whether I spread the jam with the same knife I used to cut the butter as that would be giving away a vital secret 🤫🤐

Teaspoon can double up, spreading butter, marg or the spread of choice; a quick rinse with warm water from the kettle, and it's ready to spoon out and spread conserves etc.

Toast crumbs in the butter, butter in the jam, neither do anyone in the harm. Maybe I should lick the knife clean in between applications?

I'm with JK - butter or jam, not both. Agree with sigh on kitchen roll being the solution, though...

Allergies and suchlike are different. Kitchen roll seems a bit wasteful, might as well rinse under the tap and dry with a tea towel. I love the combination of jam and butter.

Oh Dio, I used to think you were cool, but now we have to be mortal enemies...
Housemate often leaves crumbs in the butter. I have to avoid every little crumb when extracting butter for myself. So gross.
At least he keeps a separate knife for peanut butter in his room, to avoid any chance of cross contamination. He's a good lad looking out for my insane food foibles (and allergies. But that's just posh for foible )
