Moraghan - thanks for that, really interesting. I wonder how I could have a STFR test. My last blood test showed my ferritin was up to 14, so it is getting better, but obviously I have some way to go!

My performance also continues to improve. I did a great tempo run tonight - my pace close to values I was getting pre-crash! I'm so pleased I even entered the Wedding Day 7K

Doctor in Waiting
I'm glad I stumbled across this thread, really informative. I too get very breathless quickly when running (never used to) and generally feel tired ( I can probably nap most days given the chance). I've not had any tests done but might try the iron supplements just to see if there is any difference. What is Floradix and how is this different from the iron tablets generally seen on the shelves.

Can a doctor do a test for iron on demand? I have to see the doctor anyway this week and am wondering whether it's worth asking for a test.

The simple answer is a no.
You don't need iron as such, you need haemogolobin. If your haemoglobin levels are low you may feel breathless on exertion as your maximum oxygen delivery will be reduced.
Iron deficiency is one cause of a low haemoglobin. It would depend on your symptoms as to the diagnostic pathway taken once your low haemoglobin has been discovered.
