Thanks swittle - have tried the first one, but not much pain, which is probably due to the ibuprofen I took this morning.

For the 2nd one, where should my legs cross? Should my right calf be over my left shin, or should my legs be crossed higher up (like regular crossing your legs when sitting down?)

It's a standard crossing of the legs, so that the injured calf is clear of the knee on the other leg. For more fun, you can spell out your name with your toes - srs :)

lil,if its any help sounds similar to a problem i had ,which was an inflamed soleus ,inner calve.kept re-occurring at about 3 miles ,stemmed from bad stretching regime starting from hip flexor,as previous advise ,rice and 2 weeks out i was not even allowed to swim but it is now okay ,good luck.

Thanks stacky, but I'm fairly certain it's not my soleus - I quite often have soleus pain which is why I always wear calf guards. This pain is at the back of my calf and came on after running half a mile!!

ummm. surely soleus IS at the back of the calf? admittedly one side or the other of it can become inflamed. but it is as the back.... (speaking as one who has medial shin splints which turned out to be soleus. and tight calves at the back, which turned out also to be soleus)

have a look here....
eloweper.com

it runs UNDER the tendon for gastrocnemius. basically it does the same as gastroc except with a bent knee.
