I'm having a few problems with my calves and shins... A combination of either/both pain down the front of my shins and/or calves to the point of the calves seizing up.

I thought it could be that my calves may be tight but having followed some stretching sequences my flexibility in the calf seems OK.

They are perfectly fine walking, just running and worse when going up hill. No difference when wearing my Saucony Endorphin Shifts, or Inov8s.

I'm too heavy at the moment at 87kg and working on bringing that down to sub 75kg... like cake a little too much.

And I haven't increased mileage... I can't because my legs hurt... and my consistency is crap for the same reasons.

Tried calf guards. No great difference.

I'm 50, there's things I want to do, but can't because of repeated issues. 1 step forward 2 steps back.

Getting a bit bored of it now. I have completed the walk of shame far too many times!

Any ideas?

I used to get chronic shin splints. I've been using compression socks for years now. Work a treat.

Do socks have advantages over calf guards/sleeves? I've not noticed much improvement when wearing guards...

Just a thought... and this may be entirely unrelated. Very occasionally I get pins and needles in my feet, and then they go numb... this usually subsides after a few km.

Maybe socks would be better.

I've not worn sleeves so I couldn't compare.

It could be the drop of your shoes being too different to everyday life. Check the heel to toe difference in stack of your running shoes.

For me, shin splints early on in running career was straight heel striking. Moving to less built up shoes and a more midfoot running form helped me. Initially I got calf pain as the forces were moved from impact on the landing leg braking via shoe heel cushioning to more of a bent knee, achilles and calf-cushioned landing and take off. But with calf strengthening that went away too.

The problem with heel striking is you can't "train" your shin, imho!

If this is helpful or annoying but you want more info, please let me know! Good luck. Cheers, :-) G
