I also think I need to revisit Butterflies. If nothing else, it'll be interesting to see how much or how little Cheltenham has changed.

I used to like Butterflies. I doubt it has travelled well in time. I never knew it was set in Cheltenham!

I like Carla Lane’s works, for many of the reasons stated above. But I really struggle with them as comedy. Light entertainment, soft politics and very educational, but not very funny.

'Butterflies' struck me as more whimsical than belly-laugh funny. Characterisation was strong, including the chauffeur of Ria's suitor, who saw all and said nowt. Only after seeing it a number of times did I understand the message of the butterflies in their display cases.
