It's all relative. 50 quid for running trainers? No worries. 50 quid for one of the 2-3 races I do a year? Not that big a deal. Now, people people who can afford 20, 30, 40 races a year? They're the ones with money...

Yup. I'm on tiny bucks at the mo' and I'm one of the 2-3 races type people + some small local off-road 10ks which cost a fiver. It's still do-able for me and if anything, makes me more focused on a quality training plan and motivating and inspiring training partners and vice versa.

Anyway, I'm not doing this as I'm an off-road runner but just agreeing with Keefy.

Bristol's a great place, but it has some pretty rough and broke neighbourhoods.

British races are generally pretty cheap. How much is the New York marathon these days? Berlin's about 90 euros as I recall. Even Abingdon was 38 this year, and that's definitely one of your small, well-organised local races.

As Keefy says, anybody doing a load of races a year and paying for places to stay is paying a lot more than OB would be for running what I think is a local race for her.

That's it really.

I know that Bath half at £42 is expensive but when my travel and accomodation comes to £0 it's still cheap for me compared to most other races.

I am with OB in this, it's local. Brighton Marathon is £52 ( and that's if you are a member of a club )

I did 13 races this year; Brighton Marathon was the only one which involved paying for overnight accommodation. 5 of them I cycled to, so no real transport costs either. Struggling to see how 52 quid and a couple of nights in Brighton make me some kind of potlatch-committing plutocrat.

It's personal choice

I am doing Brigton in 2015, which will involve paying for accomodation. I am also doing Bath half which is 45 mins down the road and doesn't involve paying for accomodation !

We are most certainly flush with cash ……

I suspect I will do this (a) it's local and (b) more importantly I like the look of it

I don't think I've ever seen the word potlatch before.

It's shorter than "conspicuous consumption" :)

I'm quite tempted by Bristol-Bath, as it goes - I have family in the area so am down that neck of the woods regularly anyway. I'm much more worried by the elevation profile with the climb at 20 miles than the price TBH.
