Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I'm really struging at the moment with breathing when I run.

My breathing sounds like I'm either asthmatic (which I'm not) I smoke 50+ a day (which I don't not even 1) or I've just taken up running and I'm trying to do more than my body is able (which I'm not on both counts)

I set off and within a short time I am almost gasping for breath I can't seem to get enough air in my lungs. My chest was feeling a bit tight a couple if weeks ago but I don't have a cold.

I am struggling with quite bad tiredness I can't stay awake have no energy. I'm getting out for a run occasionally but can't shake whatever us going on with my breathing. Tonight I honestly felt like I was pushing hard looked at garmin expecting a number in the low 9's to find it was 10.12mm!!

The last time I was like this I came down with a virus similar to glandular fever but I felt wretched as well other than tiredness I feel ok. A little run down with a few work hassles but even those are behind me now.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar or anyone with medical expertise might have some ideas?

Thanks

The cold causes airway irritation which can have an effect similar to asthma. Anybody, even people with no history of asthma can be made wheezy by the right stimulus.

Try starting slowly. Maybe a Buff or something over the mouth to keep the ari you breathe in warm and moist. Stay hydrated.

It could be a cold or something brewing, and if you develop other symptoms, then thats what it is, but a simple cold wont necessarily have long lasting effects like glandular fever.

Dont panic.

Well I think the whole country is warming up after tomorrow...so I guess your weekend runs will give you an indication if it's to do with air temperature.
Try and make sure you get enough sleep.

GG I suffer this as well in really cold weather. I find that if I wear a buff round my neck to keep it warm, it helps with my breathing. Another wee hint is to stuff a pair of socks down the middle of your bra - keeps the centre of the chest warm :-O

In all seriousness though you could have a touch of an underlying cold as JO has said. I have been really stuffed up the past couple of weeks but its not coming to a head yet and have felt like this. This could be making breathing difficult if you have.

Muddy & I were commenting the other night about the air quality & difficulty breathing. I do think the cold air plays a part in this. I'm sure it's just that coupled with a cold or something coming on. Hope you're feeling a bit better soon. x

I felt like that today. And I do get a tight chest a few miles into a run when it's like this (or when it's too hot). See how it goes when the weather's warmer before worrying too much? Frustrating though it is.

Thanks guys I know I told a lady at Parkrun that winter makes breathing harder but this seems a bit worse than normal, but good to know that it still might just be weather. I have started my iron tablets again as I have a tendency to be slightly anaemic. I'll get my buff out and give that a go see if it helps.

Kimbles - not convinced a pair of socks would fit then again I could maybe try some baby socks lol :P

Exercise-induced asthma is made worse by cold air. Might be a mild form. Where are the medics when you need them?

GG try Spatone if you want to supplement iron. Often on offer at Tesco (3 for 2).
