I am going to Boston for the 1st time (and 5th marathon).

Anyone got any tips? Training, where to stay, what to do?

Thanks!

Stephen.

I'm going for the second time. The first time I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in south Boston, which was a lot cheaper than the hotels nearer the where the buses to the start go from/where the race finishes. It was fine as a hotel but a bit of a way out, though, so there is more time spent travelling and less time for sightseeing. This year I'm nearer to the centre. It's a great city to visit, as well as a superb marathon.

Welcome to Fetch, by the way.

Great race. I did it the year of the bombs with the OH, not been back as not had a year when both the OH and me have had the Qualifier standard. Will do it again one day, definitely.

It truly is a great race Try and book a pre race 'tour' of the course, helps a lot to see the route.

Beware the first 5 miles - easy to go too fast downhill and wreck your quads - and the Nowton hills miles won't look much when you do the recce but you will change your mind when you arrive there on race day having bashed your quads up in the first 5 miles.

Hello Tro!

Thanks for the tips - a pre-race recce sounds like a great idea!!!

I'm trying to do lots of down-hill training, but there are two problems:
1. I live in a flat place (southern Sweden), and
2. I need to somehow get to the top of the hill, before I can run down it. I'm no mountain goat ...

Cambridge looks cool. I have a friend sharing the AirBnB - but we have more space if there are any nice people who still need something ...

Looking forward to it!

No worries - I can't remember where we booked the tour but we did it in advance - it's a coach tour that stops at various places in Boston to do pick ups, then drives out to the start, shows you around that area and where everything is (they let you out to have a wander) then drives back into town on the route. Lots of commentary and useful info provided, plus some of the history and stories about the race.

Gets you nicely fired up as well.
