Agree with Becca, Freedom is good, but not as good as The Corrections.

Columba - I have an ancient prejudice against Charlotte because (from what I can remember from Mrs Gaskell's Life, and Juliet Barker's joint biography) she seems to have been rather controlling: discouraging (or stopping in her lifetime) republication of Tenant because she disapproved of it, editing Anne's poetry after her death to make her seem more resigned to fate (unforgivable, if I've got that right), reading Emily's poems without her permission - and refusing to let Anne to travel to Scarborough (when she was very ill, dying as it turned out) as soon as she wanted, instead delaying her for several weeks. It's a very unintellectual way of judging an author, and possibly influenced by being a younger sister myself*!

I will probably regret admitting all this.

Book-wise, I cannot forgive her for how bored I was reading Villette, which probably means I should have another look and see if I've changed my mind.

*My sister is not like this version of Charlotte.

Charlotte sounds like Not A Nice Person. I'm never sure if one should totally separate an author's work from his/her private life.

Villette and Shirleyt are both on my shelf, but I have not read them (yet), - they are my mother's copies, or were.
