Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Finished Gatsby. What a book! - Still didn't recognise a single scene, can't have read it before. And don't think I've read any other Scott Fitzgerald, which clearly I should. I am adding "to be read" books to my list very much faster than I'm actually reading them.

I enjoyed A Man Called Ove too. Especially liked the way it challenged your prejudices and initial impressions of characters.

I finished The Buried Giant last week, which I really enjoyed, but wouldn't necessarily recommend. I absolutely fell into the world the characters were inhabiting, rather like falling under the spell at the centre of the story, even as I senses it was all a great big metaphor.

The multiple unreliable narrators were taxing in places, but just added to the dreamlike quality. And I thought it felt very 'British', but that's typical of some of Ishiguro's work.

The problem I had with it was that many of the characters sounded the same in their dialogue, so they all started to merge together. I really like distinct voices in a book.

I've followed it up with a lightweight piece of magical realism, that I've practically forgotten already. Anyone recommend something solid and grounded to read next?

Jumping in here, as with being injured, I've been reading a fair bit again. Usually prefer crime thrillers. Bought 'The Poison Artist' by Jonathan Moore today & I'm about a quarter of the way through it already!

On the non-fiction side, I've recently read Command and Control amazon.co.uk which is about how it's a miracle we haven't all been burnt to a crisp in an accidental nuclear war. It is very good, but not very cheering.

Poison Artist sounds intriguing from a review I've just searched out - keep us posted about how it plays out. How broken are you, IW? Back on the road/trail soon?

I actually thought twice about buying it, and picked it up again after also choosing 'Hidden Bodies' by Caroline Kepnes, Badger - had to forcefully put it down to save reading it all at once (also featured on Radio 2's Book Club, apparently).

Suspected torn medial ligament & possible meniscus damage in left knee, so pretty broken - first physio told me to expect to take about 4-5 months to be back to what I was. First more intensive physio session tomorrow, so everything is crossed.

I have just finished my second Ryu Murakami book, Piercings which was in the end rather pointless and mostly unpleasant. Didn't have the satire of American Psycho but had some of the gore. Some vague atmosphere of 'ooh, isn't modern life alienating?' but it keeps its hidden depths well hidden. Off to the declutter pile with you!
