I was 'in the middle' on Station Eleven. I quite liked it... except when it kept going back to the actor character in the 'pre' era. I never worked out why she felt those bits were *so* important. This month's book is very much in the style of the author's other books (e.g. John Dies At The End) but is a bit more accomplished than them. It's not massively pickupable though. Am also about a third through |

Thought it could be a Grep type book. Though I agree with McGoo above, in that I 'enjoyed' the post apocalyptic bits more than the before times bits. I need to choose a non-dystopian fiction as my next read. Currently finishing Judy Dench's Shakespeare - The man who pays the rent, so will dip into my fiction tsundoku. |

Diogenes
I finished Utopia Avenue this morning. It was a bit of an strange reading experience. I'd say it is probably my least favourite David Mitchell so far, or was until the end. It is quite poor in many ways, predictable, clunky dialogue, unbelievable scenes, and unlikely meetings. Mitchell really throws the kitchen sink at the story of a English rock band overcoming trials and tribulations to finally hit the big time. Without giving away any spoilers, it had me in tears and quite moved me. I'm not sure if this is entirely down to Mitchell's gifts as a writer or partly also a product of my own physical and emotional levels, but it certainly had an impact, part of which is the wish that I could listen to Utopia Avenue's fictional music. David Mitchell: Manipulative git. |

Have you read Powder, @Diogenes? Your review reminds me of that. Quite patchy and could have done with an edit but a fabulous description in the middle of recording a track that really made me want to hear the track. |

Couldn't download I'm Starting.... as Amazon wanted my password. Way too much faff at gone 10pm! As one of my NYR is to read some of the older books on my TBR pile I started Engleby instead. Really enjoying it so far

I’ve not heard of Kevin Sampson, Linds. I think that Daisy Jones & The Six has set a very high bar for novels in this genre.

True. It's not as good as that. You might like his 'Awaydays'. I read a lot of his in the early 2000s. Don't know whether they stand up.
