As I understand it from someone at Foyles, it doesn’t count as a sale for the shop though - it counts as an on line sale?

That is true it counts as Foyles website sale. Still the same company, though.
You could get the shop to order it in for you and that would count as a shop sale

I liked Hamnet (which I read because Bint recommended it). Can't say I loved it, but definitely liked it.

If buying, I nearly always buy from my local Indie bookshop. That said, I'll try the library first for the Shirley Jackson.

I think I'm not alone in saying that the novel "Sylvia Townsend Warner" is the greatest work Lolly Willowes ever produced.

The Diary of a Nobody is excellent.

Most recent books. Very different but both excellent reads.
A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan
Well, the Arnhem campaign failed and turned into a terrible mess, but the bravery and sacrifice of British and American soldiers - and Dutch civilians - still reaches across the years. Very well written book and a sobering read.

The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel
Well, she was a terrific writer and this is excellent - the last 100 pages in particular, as Thomas Cromwell meets his doom at the hands of Henry VIII, an entitled, impulsive monster who made many, many bad decisions and then who did he blame? THE ENTIRE WORLD. But not himself. He reminds me of someone...

It's 900 pages and so it takes a big investment of time, but it was well worth it.
