I usually enjoy William Boyd's novels, but Gabriel's Moon is a bit naff. I'm not sure there's much to add. It is glib, cliched, and shallow. It is set in the early sixties but there's absolutely no sense of period, apart from most of the characters smoking a lot most of the time.
