Picked up 1k ships today, just in time to take on hols. I *think* it might be the copy you had, @McGoohan. It's originally Essex Libraries, but it's come from Redsou, according to the bit of paper. No marmite, though.

That sounds like the one. I was really good at wiping the Marmite off

I quite like the idea that it's doing the rounds of Book Club members.

There’s a new Ian Rankin Rebus novel out in 50 days, Midnight and Blue. I’ve just read a preview of the first chapter. It’s very good.

Ooh I just got an email with a link to that first chapter too, so will have a read. I usually score the latest Rebus in my birthday book pile

Recent reading. All non-fictional so doubtless a bit boring for some tastes. Politics on the Edge by Rory Stewart Rory writes well in describing his life as a Conservative politician. He seems like an earnest, well-meaning soul, and he was dedicated to doing a good job in government. His central thesis seems to be that government in this country is too often in the hands of ungifted amateurs, idiots and snakes who couldn't run a whelk stall. Agreed. He's better off out of it. No Way Out by Tim Shipman The story of Theresa May's attempt to deliver Brexit. Very complicated and "procedural". She comes across as dedicated but a bit odd, and not really a very good politician at all. Johnson, Truss and Gove emerge in both these books as exactly how they have long been characterised: an idiot, an even bigger idiot and a serial backstabber. No wonder we ended up in such a mess. Unruly by David Mitchell The story of English monarchs from Cerdic to Elizabeth 1. Humorous enough. I got a few laughs out of it, but quite lightweight - as intended. Would I recommend any of these? Probably not. |
