Just checked. It's when it's the character's interior monologue.

Wikipedia says that speech marks, as such, were invented in the middle of the 16th century, though before that there were other conventions for indicating speech, e.g. use of a different font.

Ok. I’m finally here. I couldn’t tell you why it’s taken me so long - I talk books with Bint every time we meet and she’s always telling me to get myself on the thread.

How does it all work then? Apart from some reading, obvs.

In the beginning there was the Choosinator. The first Choosinator was me, as nominated by a few wise men and women and I selected our first book, The Humans, by Matt Haig for September 2014.

At the end of each month the previous Choosinator selects a successor from those that have asked to be choosinators. You can be a part of the group but elect not to be a choosinator, just as you can opt out of any month’s selection.

A cycle is complete when all the current choosers have chosen one book, and then everyone goes back into the pool.

Once a book is chosen, McG creates a separate discussion book where you can discuss the work freely without worrying about spoilers.

There are 3 rules in book group

1. No spoilers in the main thread
2. Don’t let Greppers’ choose a space opera
3. No Dan Brown

Ah. There has been an exception. I got away with a very short space opera once - July 2019. I think it's been unofficially banned ever since.

I thought it was quite sweet. Think most people hated it. Something to do with it being a space opera, possibly.

I thought most people quite liked it. Long Way to a Short Hairy Planet. No, I quite like some space opera, but not that one I was the outlier I think.
