I seem to remember getting it from the children's library in Manchester. Have just checked - not printed recently but pretty easy to get hold of. I want to re-read it now!

Linds, if they are German, left wing Guardian readers then anything will do really.
Bearing in mind I am that same background but Dutch... Only thing that irks me is the poor editing in the Grauniad ;)
I would go for something topical like Orwell: 1984, Animal Farm?
Non-Fiction I would think Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island would go down well...
