WitW has not aged well IMHO - it has a very unpleasant undertone re: the place of the working classes and the 'rightful' position of the upper classes.

To Serve Them All My Days I found to be a very uplifting book. The main character is fairly sound politically too

How about some English books set in Germany? The Innocent, by Ian McEwan, or Out Of The Shelter, by David Lodge come to mind. Or, conversely, The Rings Of Saturn by the German writer W. G. Sebald, which is set in Norfolk.

McGoo - Have you ever read Wild Wood by Jan Needle? It's a very different (and excellent) take on Wind in the Willows - I love WitW, there are many lovely things about it but absolutely agree with you too.
