It was removed before I saw it, but perhaps that's something I should be grateful for.

How about a book quiz?
I’m not so much interested in the correct answer to this question, but in how many different possible answers there are.
The background is that this is a book by a white, middle-class male writer. That doesn’t narrow it down much so we’ll go straight into the first clue. Please suggest any novel you can think of that is a possible match.
1. This book begins with the story of a young, white, middle-class man who is the product of a minor public or top grammar school is a recent Oxbridge graduate. He finds work teaching at anothe minor public school but is soon called away to war.

I was going to say Brideshead Revisited except he was an artist not a teacher, and at the moment nothing else springs to mind.......

Yes, but it fits too.
There is a huge number of British novels that follow the same tropes. This is not a criticism, because I like or love most of them, but I wonder how long the tradition will be continued? It reflects the significance two world wars had on our society and artistic output.
I wonder what novelists will be writing about in the year 2100?
