And To Serve them all my Days, although he was the son of a miner. Not sure who wrote it, but it was very sad!

Thank you, although I am none the wiser, it's a long time since I read it as a teenager.

If you did a cut and shut on three or four Evelyn Waugh novels, you could get something that fits the whole pattern, but I don’t think any of them are quite there individually.

I read 'To serve them all my days' last year, as he lived much of his life in Sidmouth, and really enjoyed it. But you're right, he was a working class lad whose story starts when he came back from the Great War.
I feel sure I've read the book Dio describes but maybe it's just such a generic setting I only think I've read it.

Diogenes
Well the book I’m reading at the moment is A Possible Life, by Sebastian Faulks which (the first section of) seemed so familiar I was beginning to think I’d read it before (I haven’t), but lots similar.
Today I bought The Mirror & The Light by Hilary Mantell (been waiting for it to come out in paperback for ages it seems), Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart (last year’s Booker winner), and something called Around The Coast in Eighty Waves by Jonathan Bennett (continuing my odd enthusiasm for books about surfing).
I did also look at and almost get The Five People You Meet In Heaven, May’s choice, but something about it didn’t quite convince me. Also, completely irrationally, I really hated the cover. I shall order it from the library.

I think that’s probably a good choice. Im three quarters the way through and it’s quite a straightforward book. That’s not a terrible thing but I’m not feeling I will be rereading it
