Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Greg, not that many people read Cancer Ward, but it actually went down fairly well with those who did.
There was, certainly, an offputting amount of negativity about the choice. With hindsight, I should have picked something else off my shortlist which has more recently gone down very well on the other book thread.

I began Cancer Ward many years ago but had to put it back on the shelf and leave wherever it was I started it. Your choice wasn’t the right time for me, but I would like to read it because I remember being very impressed with what I did read.

It isn't an easy read, but it isn't that hard, and it's an important work. (I started the Gulag Archipelago once, and that was too much for me. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is easier, and a lot shorter than either of the other two!)

I thought cancer ward was very good - i has a number of Russian reads on the go at the time which helped though as there was a familiar pace and a rhythm to it which made it a quick read at the time

Dombo - for clarity, it was an observation not a criticism. I probably only read between a third and half the choices in a given year but that’s my loss.

I assume we will have the September book chosen in time for my trip to Waterstones/Foyles on Saturday?

That is a fair assumption.

I remember. That’s the only reason I actually regret picking it...
I almost picked Embassytown. Would definitely have been better for you!
