Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

But I thought there was a law that said you had to like Wolf Hall? I thought a bloke from English Heritage was going to call the police a couple of weeks ago when I admitted to not having read it.

Wolf Hall should be right up my avenue as I like a good bit of historical fiction, but I really couldn't get on with it. People kept saying to persist, but I reckon I got a good 50% through and decided life was too short to persist with a book I wasn't enjoying.

I'm not overly fond of books where you need to make a list of characters as you meet them. And on the other hand I love Anna Karenina... go figure

I loved Wolf Hall and surprised myself by enjoying Eleanor Oliphant
Failed two or three times on Ulysees, always around the same point.
Proust is on my list to attack with gusto, once I get a round tuit.

All I remember about Anna Karenina was that I enjoyed it more than War and Peace. That's not especially helpful when both are 30+ years in the rear view mirror. I didn't dislike either of them - or particularly rave about them either.

- Agonising Christ, wouldn't it give you a heartburn on your arse? (an lol moment from Ulysses).

I love Proust first book. Possibly because in a Python sketch it was once summarised and captured really adeptly by a bicycle choir

Sorry you didn’t like Eleanor Oliphant, Greg. I found it took a bit of getting into, but then was well worth the effort.
Another one here who hasn’t read Wolf Hall.

I once read the first 3 volumes of Proust (an edition which was in about 12 volumes, I think), stopped when the next volume wasn’t in the library, and never restarted.
