My brother was very taken with gormenghast and all things Tolkien as a result of going into the bank at 15 and being surrounded by grim overlords and labyrinthine procedures. He’d probably have liked Kafka too. I read a lot of Steinbeck at one time too and quite a lot of Philip Roth although always with a breather for fresh air in between
