Oh yes, David Lodge.

Like Seren, I read a lot of Dorothy Sayers a long time ago, but never read murder mysteries now. I read Ngaio Marsh too.

The Case is Altered - I've seen that pub. North London, is it? Harrow and Wealdstone-ish?

Finished The Brothers Karamazov. Would like to re-read, but possibly in another translation. Anyone advise? (Sharkie?) I read the Magarshak translation (1958)There's a 1990 one (Pevear and Volokhonsky) and a 2011 one (Susan McReynolds Oddo)

And started Northanger Abbey. It was definitely one we read in school; I recognised the sentence "she began to curl her hair and long for balls" which provoked a smothered giggle when read out loud in class. So innocent was I in those days that I didn't know what my fellow-students were laughing at, though guessed it was some sort of double entendre.

There are two pubs called TCIA near Harrow, but I don't think either of them was the one that was referred to.

One is in Pinner and the other in Bushey.

Columba I also didn’t guess what they were laughing at till I reread. I’m hopeless at double entendres but am now laughing a lot

It will have been the Pinner one, Linds. Had a boyfriend who lived near there. In my premarital days, late 60s - early 70s.

Arrived at holiday home. There are 4 books here, 3 by Jackie Collins and one by Diana Appleyard which looks to be of a similar type.
