Winter In Madrid was one I was tempted by when looking at long books.

Daz, I will always remember that book because I used to lurk in those parts myself (North London) and in the summer of '84 could often be found in a pub that is mentioned, you'll have to confirm when you read it but I'm sure it was "The Case is Altered". Unusual name for a pub.
Back onto the point, I may have to re-read some of his books. He clearly had a dry sense of humour and was a keen observer of the English and our vagaries

I bought Winter in Madrid ages ago. It's on the shelf.

I read the first one. Liked it but didn’t love it.
Have we (me and NE) had Joe Abercrombie?

Wilbur Smith?
I have read probably all bar 3 or 4. Read the first Courteney novel by accident while in Kenya on holiday and kind of got hooked.

Bernard Cornwall tick.
Good shout with Wilbur Smith. Very good shout.
James Hadley Chase anyone? Fairly sure I didn’t read more than two or three but *someone* must have this skeleton in their closet...

Nobody’s claimed Ed McBain yet either I don’t think. ‘Cop Hater’ was on my long list last time I was choosinator.
