I have actually navigated for someone on L2 of their JNC.

I used a line that NE had told me about which was much quicker, although I did have to say that they'd just have to trust me as they'd not done it :-o

So eldest decided on Tea Round anyway today as the weather was good and he liked the idea of a challenge. We dropped him off at George Fisher about 9:10am, then drove ourselves to Gatesgarth where we parked up with a stash of food and drink in the car for him to supplement what he was carrying whilst we did a family walk up Haystacks. We walked exceptionally slowly (including 30 minutes dipping our toes in the beck on the way down), he was a bit quicker doing about 6:45, so was back in Keswick before we’d driven back over. He nearly bailed out at Buttermere apparently, impressed with his resilience, especially as we’d cobbled together food and snacks and just left him to it!

We really should get up to the Lakes more often...

He's got his eyes on a BG at some point, so good to see the kid we took to athletics as a 9yo properly loving running, especially fell running. Shame it's a bit flat around us!!

Running up and down Helsby hill and Frodsham hill as a kid did Paula Radcliffe no harm, Larkim?

Larkim - you've got the N Wales hills on your doorstep (and there are plenty of races around moel famau, so don't need to go all the way to Snowdonia) and the lakes aren't that far away. Plus the races in and around horwich (even if sadly the winter hill race is no longer with us).

And you don't need huge hills to train for the fells, not initially anyway. Not until you get deeper into by training (although doubtless some on here may disagree! ;-) )

Hill reps up the chevin and Ilkley moor serve many a fell runner round here well.

Orienteering is excellent fell running training - you lose the “must stay on the path” attitude.

LOL growing up in Scotland is pretty good for that too :-). Maybe it’s dying out with the open access laws anyway?

Simon F is the expert, but I concur that Chevin reps do the job. You can get some decent climb in on the Chevin, I've only really started to appreciate it recently.
