Nice piece, DT. Good catch. I'll enjoy :)

Sir William commented at an event I was at a couple of months ago that he expected his record to be taken soon but not by Rob Jebb (who had made his attempt by then). I wonder if Ricky Lightfoot was the person he had in mind.

I always thought Jebby was the man for the job, but his problem is he's getting older now, has a family and is so all-round talented he has too much to do to focus on specific training and optimising his route. His BG time was outrageously good. With even a few weeks focus I think he could have done it a few years ago, but doubt he'll try again. His and Sharon's reaction at his finish (on the film I saw) said it all

Billy said that Rob Jebb isn't a fast enough descender to take the record. He is SUCH a phenomenal all-round athlete, though. And yes, with the sharpness he'd have had ten years ago, who knows?

I was in Wasdale a year or two ago and a local said Ricky had descended from the top of the Pike in either 10 or 12 minutes! :-O Losing weight and hard work will improve climbing to a surprisingly large extent and you can get better at descending but the good runners are born with it. Holmsie was / is a brilliant descender

I have a work visitor from Germany with me this week. He's been telling me about a friend of his who does 100K mountain runs and castle step hill reps. I told him I knew a few people like that ;-)

A guy turned up a couple of weeks ago on our Wednesday night 'torcher idea who expressed an interest in doing a BG. Me and Stef encouraged him but he's not been seen since. I might offer to run round the Hobble with him. Always a BG'ey sort of day

Great run by Jim but Shane Ohly had some interesting comments post Jim's run about what should consist of a Winter Round. I think it was mostly aimed at Donnie Campbell's record which got a lot of (sponsor generated/orchestrated?) publicity. I had people at work who have no interest in fell running mentioning that round to me. By contrast, there was nothing on BBC about Jim this week.

Fortunately there are still people like Jim in the sport who can achieve great things without feeling the need to be narcisstic media whores and realise the true measure of what they do is not measured in column inches :-)
