Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Anybody got it?

I've binned the car and am commuting on the bike now. I've just ordered a Trek Hybrid to replace my old, heavy and slow (although that could just be me!) mountain bike and now that I'll have two relatively 'not-that-cheap' bikes (the hybrid and my road bike) - along with my cycle commute amongst some very ignorant drivers - I've been thinking of getting a cycle insurance policy. Has anyone else got this, or can they recommend it / not recommend it? Do I just keep my fingers crossed and hope nobody pinches / runs in to either of my bikes?

Does your Home Insurance already cover this? Or do you need something more specialised?

Home insurance covers the bike if it's stolen from home. Not sure if it was stolen from work. But I'm thinking more if anything happened to the bike (or me!) on my commute; I don't think the home insurance would cover it if it was hit by a car (hopefully somehting that will never happen but I've had a few near misses already with the ignorant drivers about here)...

I had problems with this, my Lloyds home insurance did not cover our bikes up to anything like their value when I bought them last year. I covered them by buying seperate ETA insurance, but this is expensive and I can't recommend it if you have the option of including it your home insurance.

This year I binned Lloyds and switched to Direct Line, they will automatically cover bikes up to 1000 quid and bikes of higher value as named items on the policy. Much better and cheaper than ETA.

Watching this thread with interest as my bike isn't covered on my home insurance unless it's stolen from home. Personal possessions cover (things like mobile phone etc) is pretty minimal too. So I'm supposed to be shopping around to find a better deal.

NE, we're with Direct Line for Buildings & Contents but don't know if it's the basic policy or the plus policy (where bikes are automatically covered). I'm sure my road bike's included on it anyway but will they question another two bikes being added (Mr D's getting a hybrid too cos he can't see green cheese go by him!)?

Family Protection is another optional extra on Direct Line's policy, I wonder if that would cover an accident on the bike (if I was knocked off)....

I would have thought that if it is stolen away from home then you would have had to lock it with an approved lock, otherwise it is covered

You would need to check your home policy

Being hit by a car would presumably fall under Accidental Damage

Best thing would be to call your home policy providers and check

Otherwise people like Evans Cycles do one

If you are hit by a car wouldn't you claim the cost of repair/replacement off the driver's insurance (assuming they stopped of course) ?? "Had an accident, not your fault, we can get you thousands ......" and all that jazz

When I commuted by bike I was covered by my home insurance for outside of work only when chained to something.

I'd give your insurer a ring and find out. Ask them how much it would be to add any extra protection you need to your exisiting policy. Good luck
