Wow W that's a lot of sugar, how many hives have you got? Out of curiosity, have you ever tried not feeding them?

We've got six hives at the moment. We try only to when it's necessary i.e. when there is a risk of starvation without.

Hello Cheekys dad and welcome I have had my hives come through the winter here as strong as anything, the only thing i have dome different this winter was to leave a super on and in July (January in the northern hemisphere) i put some sugar syrup in, and it seem to have worked a treat. One hive was bursting at the seams and have split it 3 ways so hope we have a bumper season. |

Here in Andalucia the equivalent of the UK Winter is our Summer because it's too hot for most plants to flower. But we never feed our bees. We plant as much as we can for them and they have to work really hard to find what they need to keep them going, which they do. We very rarely lose a hive in the summer, and our honey isn't overly sweet either, which a lot of people here like.

This thread has been quiet for some time - although bees and keepers will not have been ![]() I left opening the hives until the beginning of this month, and 5 colonies made it through the winter to varying degrees. Went to inspect today and figured the grass was about to drown the hives... So I figured I had better cut the grass or the girls would not be able to find their homes! Strimming around hives is not without difficulty - the petrol strimmer is noisy and vibrates - two things bees are not overly keen on - thought it better to strim in the bee suit - even though that means the suit is now covered in grass.. ![]() |

Good work Boffin I’m sure the girls will appreciate it. Reminds me that I need to do something similar

I did a lazy pre-emptive swarm control on the far left hive on first inspection - very strong hive, far too many bees... took out a frame off eggs and BIAS, frames with stores and pollen including whatever bees and shook in a load more bees to make the lazy nuc... No idea which box had the queen, figured the one without would soon tell me and raise some queens. Sure enough next inspection the original hive had loads of QC - and yes, the queen had gone into the nuc 🙂 All happy 👍 |

Well done, always better to pre-empt the little beggars.
