Hollywoof!
The swim's not nearly as rough as you might imagine. Most of the swims I've done have actually ended up with quite a lot of space quite quickly - most waves have maybe 100 people in the water and they spread out quickly - so you don't really end up that crowded in...

I can't see it happening somehow. I swim like I've just had a perm.

Fetch - in a pool swim tri, if you want to overtake you tickle the persons toes in front of you. Att he end of the length they should pull over to let you through.
I've never swum a whole swim leg of a tri front crawl, even in open water (I've done 5 tri so far). Although I think I'll be able to do front crawl in my next tri. I'm slow so I wait for the whistle/gun/hooter to go wait a couple of seconds until everyone has got a move on then set off.

Do you see anyone on mountain bikes at tri 's. Also how does the pool swim thing work. Is there a gap between your swim and bike or is it like a handicap race where the best overall time determins your finishing position. And-are they all swim bike run or do any do it any other way ?

Fetch in open water just swim to the side a bit. You end up swimming a little bit further but it's worth it not to get your head kicked in
