It was pretty bright earlier, but covered by cloud now. Seems like much of the UK is getting pictures on the phone if not visible to the naked eye.

The app on my phone kept alerting me to go try taking pics and see if I could capture it, but there’s a house in the way and a badly placed streetlight

Yes. But I was too settled in the house to go out and see.

This is a photo that my daughter who lives near Beccles in Suffolk sent from her local Facebook community group last night.

The trouble with photos are that they have no resemblance to what can be seen by the naked eye on most occasions.

Can someone recommend an app to me please? I have never seen the aurora and it’s one of my “most wanted” things

When seeing these pictures, it's important to understand that there is often little or nothing visible to the naked eye - perhaps just a white glow on the horizon. The vivid colours are the result of using long exposures on a camera or phone.
I took this in the back garden in September - it was a clear starry night, but there was essentially no aurora visible except by photography. Last night was much brighter.
You need to find a really dark place with a good unobstructed view to the north, and (ahead of time) learn how to use whatever astrophotography mode your phone has.

Re: what app to use.
I use the iOS Aurora Watch app and you get loads of updates even minor ones when essentially there's no chance of anything happening. Though it seems to need updating a lot (may be my phone). I coincidentally realised on Saturday it hadn't notified me since the flurry of activity in late September / early October so updated it. Had at least 6 notifications yesterday, the first red alert was at about 4.30pm as we arrived for a firework display in Hartlepool. Alas didn't see anything. I was home and in light pollution by the time of the later red alert.
