I'm jealous. :-p

It looks as if this morning's aurora was the M9.94 CME hitting the earth, and there were apparently "after shocks" occurring throughout the day. There was a further good substorm early this evening - except it had quickly become foggy in Cambridge, although according to the weather map there were clear skies just a few miles north (Cottenham/Wilburton?). There have been viewings reported in the UK as far south as Cornwall, anywhere where there wasn't fog or cloud.

Quite strong display in progress at the moment. Bit too cloudy for good pictures here - 90% of the sky is clear, but low down to the north is not, and that's obviously where the aurora is. Just able to catch the edge of it.

This was my best attempt from the garden - it was just a bit too cloudy for a clear view. Must've cleared up after I went to bed, as it's very sunny and frosty now.

One of my Aurora Watch apps last night forecast "aurora visible tonight over the whole of the UK", but all the other apps gave no warning, although Glendale did show a large Expansion.
It was all academic anyway because there was partial cloud here.

Supposedly tonight could be the strongest geomagnetic storm in 20 years. Aurora could be visible anywhere in the UK.

Need to stay up late though, it doesn't get properly dark until after 11 (or later in Scotland, obvs). Fingers crossed we get the correct direction of the magnetic field (Bz) for a display.

The sunspot producing all this is visible without any magnification - well worth trying to catch assuming you have the correct stuff to view it safely (even a DIY pinhole camera with a shoebox will do).
