Hi Gracie, although Ive lost a lot of my fitness and betablockers do limit your max hr, when I was in sinus rythym and still on a small dose of betablockers I was able to run pretty fast. However being in AF really reduces the efficiency of the heart and then add in that its beating more slowly, then you will probably be way down on your best pace. Thankfully at the minimal dose I'm on it keeps me in sinus rhythmn and doesnt really make me feel any more tired than I would be due to my running and gym work.

Good news Gracie :)

I'm still on beta blockers so I've found it hard to get my HR up in runs - although it seems to have increased at the top end by about 20 bpm after my PVI. I'm going for review at the end of July when (hopefully) they'll give me the go ahead to do a bit more effort and start to reduce the meds (still on flecainide and warfarin as well).

Hi All
had my review yesterday and have withdrawn flecainide with immediate effect. If no episodes over the next four weeks I can reduce beta blocker by half and if no effect withdraw completely one week after that, so in six weeks I should hopefully be free of medication other than warfarin:) They also gave me the go-ahead to exercise at higher intensity:)

macca - great news :-)

I'm doing a local 5k tomorrow - first for 2 years.
I've done a couple of low-key 10k's this year, but this could be a bit more of a test

Hi all, Just returned to the blog after a busy time. The last few posts very helpful. I have since been to The QE Birmingham for a 24HRM test and my next appointment is 30 August. I am now on 25gm of intelolol. Think thats how you spell it. With not running for so long it was soul destroying shuffling along like a snail but obviously fitness returns and I can now do 5km without a stop although it is hideously slower than my normal 8min mile pace of last year. I can manage a Park run now but I'm at the back.
Does fitness return to some degree even with the heart problems as I assume the fitter you are the better.
I have a list of questions to ask the cardiologist when I go.

good question Gracie

my usual 5k pace is 8 min/mile (my last 10 5ks before AF struck were in the range 22:50-24:30).

Nowadays the best I can manage at the minute is 31 mins:(. I'm hoping some semblance of "normality" will resume once the meds are gone but I'm not sure - hopefully I'll soon find out:)

I hope you have a cardiologist who supports continuing activity and doesn't want you to wrap yourself in cotton wool :)

No the cardiologist likes activity. He is not in favour of extreme sports as he thinks they may be the cause of all the heart problems. My times for 5km are silmilar to yours Macca. But I would like to think with fitness improving the speed might come back

hi all, no meds now other than warfarin for the next three months. Did a MHR run test last week and got to 167 bpm (but not very fast unfortunately:()

Had a 72 hr Holter test last weekend and get the results on my next review in a couple of weeks (to see if there are any episodes that I'm missing I suppose). So far all is positive:):)

great news macca.
I've just had annual check-up with GP. He's asked me to go back to discuss results - suspect cholesterol is high, but probably due to lack of activity over last 2 years. Gradually stepping up training and increasing intensity. Did 5k in sub-23 a couple of weeks ago

Not on any meds apart from pill-in-pocket Fleccainide - but only had to take 2 tabs in over 6 months, and none for 4 or 5 months

Have occasional 'flutter' but not AF - had a 24-hr monitor, but not conclusive. Will discuss at next cardio session in December
