Hi all, my friend is a very keen (and experienced) climber, and he's taking me bouldering at an indoor place in the next couple of weeks. I'm excited but have some serious upper body hypermobility and zero upper body strength, so this could be interesting, but thought I'd pop into the thread to see if anyone had any tips for a first timer?!

My friend is very patient and is training to be a climbing instructor, so I don't foresee too many problems... but no idea what to expect, all the same. Haven't even climbed a tree since I was about 10.

Tips? Have fun, and expect to feel as if you've survived an attempt to rip your arms off the following day ;)

Ha, sounds good! Oh yes, always good to remember it's supposed to be fun... too easy to think of it as just a scary thing.

First time climbing for a month, my arms feel dead. But I now have harnesses, rope, shoes and everything i need to move off the bouldering wall. A lot more fun already. Eden Rock is calling.

Another nice session at Transition last night with a friend. Another opportunity to swoon over the boulderers. I then took the boy today as well. Got a little frustrated by being booted off all the walls most suitable for beginners to accommodate a birthday party who had 'paid a lot of money'. Had a moan to the manager who was absolutely lovely and showed us which walls the boy could rainbow climb in the meantime, and then came back over to tell me he had good technique. Despite my original grumpiness it turned out to be a great session and QP really loves it :)

I used to go climbing every week, then I had 3 years off having babies and now I go once a month if that and I've lost all my nerve! Anyway, its a good chance to get out the house and have a good chinwag with a pal :) Sounds like they were quite accommodating at TE HP!

Yes they are generally very lovely at TE. Let me know when you want to go again. I am super keen at the moment :)

K2: The Killer Summit

In August 2008, 25 climbers from several international expeditions converged on high camp of K2, the final stop before the summit of the most dangerous mountain on earth. 48 hours later, 11 had been killed or simply vanished, making it the deadliest day in mountaineering history.

In a century of assaults on K2, only about 300 people have ever seen the view from the planet's second highest peak. More than a quarter of those who made it didn't live long enough to share the glory.

At the heart of this documentary lies a mystery about one extraordinary Irishman, Ger McDonnell. At the very limit of his physical resources, he faced a heartbreaking dilemma. Through recreations, archive and home movie footage, and interviews with survivors and families, the film creates a forensic, vivid version of events that is emotive, engrossing and, at times, deeply shocking.
