I love Azul. It's a great game that looks as good as it plays.

I played Azul with my brother and nephews, it’s very easy to pick up and quite addictive, but also not too long to play.

Alternative viewpoint: Azul is good but it really is a very abstract game. You're really just managing patterns and sets.

For your mixed age family group, I would strongly recommend Everdell (don't let the folksy-woodland-creatures appearance put you off) in which you draw cards and gain resources which enable you to build the best village, or Castles of Mad King Ludwig, in which you act as an architect building a castle, room by room, and earning different bonuses for incorporating different types/shapes of room in your design.

We are 55, 50, 19 & 16. Over the past half dozen years we’ve most enjoyed TtR, Flamme Rouge, Carcassone and Uno ( :) ).

Villainous was good (Disney-themed but no worse for that) but we haven’t played for ages.

Pandemic is enjoyably different as you have to cooperate as a team to beat the game and win.

I also bought Scythe a couple of years ago; it’s magnificent but only my lad really likes to play.

I found someone this weekend selling their Kickster Black Ops edition of SAS Rogue Regiment.
So I have to look forward to when it arrives in the next few days.

For those ages and not too heavy I recommend:
Trekking through History - 2p collect dated cards in series and optionally read out the txt for what happened in that year
Cat in a box - tricks where you decide the suit of each card you play but you have a scoring device that keeps everyone consistent.
Air, land and sea - 2p cards where you aim to dominate theatres of action. There is an animal-themed version.
Skyrise - place buildings on a map after gaining the right by an auction mechanism

We have lots more to comment on if you know of a theme or mechanism you're interested in.

Totri... I would add -

Quacks of Qudlingburgh - a bag building game where each round you make a potion of several ingredients but have to judge when to stop otherwise the potion explodes. Not too long and addictive

Calico - a quilt building game where as you add patches you make sets and cats will come to sit on your quilt, or you add buttons for sets of colours... very calm game but quite strategic if you want to maximise score

Carcasonne - tile laying to build cities, roads and fields... can be competitive if you want it to be and much better if you do

It's been a while since I extolled my hatred of Carcassonne - man do I hate that game. Dunno what it is about it, but we just don't get along :)
