If you want a nice, stiff foam, it takes some doing without a steam pipe but can be done. You will have to hold the milk against the boil DO NOT LET IT BOIL, then whisk it frantically while keeping it against the boil it should froth up.

And for the love of the Coffee God, if you're making a cappuccino don't spoon the foam on from the jug, pour the milk in from the side of the jug, retaining the foam inside, then slide the foam on to the top of the coffee. Seeing the milk decanted with a spoon makes my coffee making pedant's blood boil (it knocks out all the air and destroys the silky smooth foam that a cappuccino should have). Although thankfully not the milk... ;-)

Hann, I have this Gaggia (bought as a birthday present)

coffeeitalia.co.uk

I use Lavazza espresso ground coffee and use goats milk which I froth up with the steamer. Hmmmmmm. Tend to only use it at weekends as don't have much time in week mornings to make one before work

Nice one Anj. I have my morning coffee at work during the week, at home at the weekend. At home I grind my own beans and froth up milk and it all takes too long on a working day morning.

I would really like a coffee now before I go to bed but I don't want to be up all night either.

Rancilio make better coffee machines than Gaggia!

Better to grind your own beans and use the most basic coffee pot than use pre-ground coffee in the best machine in the world!

Milk in coffee is just wrong.
