Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Wimped off the running and headed over to the pool. Haven't been there for ages. Thought it was going to be that 'It's January - got to get fit' busy but everyone got out when I got in!! (All OAP's heading home for lunch I think!)
Managed a reasonable swim. I'm trying to practice my front crawl - not my favourite stroke so I have to force myself to do it. Managed 1 length in full and 2 3/4 lengths. I get out of breath whilst doing it whereas I can swim 'proper' breast stroke for ages. Must be something to do with effort and my breathing. Can you breathe in too much and would this make a difference? (Needs to go and find the 'ask the silly questions swimming thread) Oh well - back to the VAT returns! Oh joy!

Pin Lady, perhaps you are trying to lift your head too far out the water to breath? This is really tirimg and you lozze all your form. Keep your head lowish and rotate your neck, don't lift it.

PL: The key to front crawl breathing for me was to breathe *out* really slowly (as if you're blowing bubbles) and it seems to make the breath in more relaxed and less 'snatched'.

Club run done, and the vile weather only started as I was cycling home which was a bonus. However, I cannot fool myself that my foot is entirely happy. It's not too bad at the moment but the grumbling is certainly getting louder. Not sure why - I wore my brand new Transcends plus orthotics, and it's not as though I've bumped up the mileage dramatically. Anyway, rest day tomorrow, my foot will be glad about that.

Also don't kick your legs too mich PL. That uses oxygen and you get out of breath. Fc is an arms stroke. Common runners' mistake.

Good point, Linds. Legs are just fluttering to keep your bum up and your line straight; not gor propulsion.

Also, PL, how often do you take a breath? I take one every third breath or, if I'm really just drifting along, every fifth. Three strokes seems to be right for me to get into a nice settled rhythm. Try just counting your strokes rather than thinking about breathing (IYSWIM.)

I stopped doing FC when my shoulder was playing up and have never really been able to get back what I used to be able to do - I struggle to breathe at all to the left, so I am very one-sided!
Breastroke I can do all day at a reasonable pace - but it doesn't do my knees any good. This is why I don't swim much, even though I love it and it was always "my" sport :(
