Ta for the tea. I'm feeling much better.
No school uniforms here, thank the lord, though I pay enough for vastly overpriced football kit. It's probably not worse than gymnastics though, once you add on the plimsole gymnastics shoes that cost about 50 quid, hand things for the bars, different hand things for the rings and what not. (You can tell I was an expert and highly-engaged gymnastics-mum.)

I would NEVER send my kids to buy their own shoes! (age 10 and 13). They would come back with lime-green trainers that cost 200 quid.

sometimes they surprise you. Sometimes not in a good way. If it works it saves a tedious day though it depends if having to take them back is worth the risk. My nephew was somewhat unreliable but did manage shoe buying just because he couldn’t bear family shopping

Run done. Only 3 and a half miles, but it all adds up. Trying, and failing, to remember when I gave up overseeing (in some sort of way) my children's choice of shoes.

3+ miles ✅ I can’t remember either event though I just tried, but we still talk about what 🏃♀️ shoes are good

I insisted that I oversaw their school shoe choice until they left high school, but that was because their school had a draconian shoe policy that was applied very unevenly. T1 wanted my advice on hers and T2 would have bought trainers. Even with my oversight I had two occasions where they 'phoned to say the shoes were not acceptable.
