I'm curious to know how many gels people tend to have during the course of a marathon, especially if you take over 5 hours to run it.

My Facebook is full of people posting what kit they are taking to VLM tomorrow and they all have huge handfuls of gels! The only times I've run further than a half, I was running a lapped course with an aid station full of cake, so I probably had more fuel than I really needed. 😅

But for a half I'm generally have no more than a packet of shot bloks, so I'm wondering how much fuel I would use if there wasn't a ready cake supply.

I like 3 lucozade bottles on a marathon but it gives me a really uncomfortable moment around mile 15 before it settles down ... is that really better than feet?
Love the pic, all looking very slinky
Umbrage is looking a bit mauled, that's the trouble with letting the thread cat play with it
Crikee LD hope he's ok and glad you're recovering. I'd let your sister stay in an empty house myself
See your youngest there next yr Columba I hope!
Off to knit more bunting,we will be in the air and on the way home while you're all running luck

Frags, I've found that how many gels/shot bloks/sweets I need really depends on the day. I had two gels and about 15 jelly babies at Brighton, and my PB marathon I had nine shot bloks and a couple of jelly babies.
I've also run marathons with nothing apart from water, and others with whatever crisps/choc/fig rolls there are at checkpoints.
I have gels that have run hundreds of miles with me because I never used them.

I also only have water to drink so that might make a difference if you have electrolyte drinks.

It's probably worth listing what you use on your long runs so you can see if there's a pattern.

Carp - the amounts you listed were about what I thought I would use, not the 7 or 8 gels I've been seeing on FB.

I have only run over 13.1 miles twice so far, and they were at the cake filled events. I did an 18 miler, then a marathon a month later. Not the most conventional route to a marathon but I wasn't planning to run that far on the day!

I'm back in South Yorks. Have enjoyed my parkrun tourism over the last two weeks, Lodz last week was a bit cold and everyone spoke funny. Aldershot was nice and sunny today (when the wind died down) and everyone spoke funny. :-P

Fetchie fact - I've never worn French knickers. Even on my head.

*waves* to Som - welcome home :)

thread fell off watch list - didn't notice as I've seen posts from most of you elsewhere today.

LD - I'd have told her to find a hotel! - sounds bad re the parkrunner :(

Looking forward to tomorrow -if I can get there, first train isn't 'til 8.15 bought ticket (return +travelcard =£20) and can't collect it 'cos the machine is bust. Nice man on twitter says to travel anyway and explain - shall print his tweet out JIC!

luck luck to all the marathoners.

I take 1 gel before I start and carry 4 or 5 (but prob take 3 more). For a half I carry one more but don't always take it.

I am really looking forward to running ALONE! Today, one old bat couldn't control her shopping buggy, then swung an arm out to get her balance and hit me. She had the cheek to shout "porca miseria" at ME! I was even on the road to get around her. And I STILL didn't stop to explain the errors of her ways (ITG turns the other cheek. And polishes halo. And looks forward to raining hot coals on her head from heaven - it is in Matthew, trust me.)

Remind me of this when I am complaining about snow and ice.

Welcome to the 700 miles in 2017 thread, everybody welcome :-)

The thread motto is:

'700 miles is neither necessary nor sufficient'

All you have to do is run about 1.91 miles per day or 13.46 miles per week or 58.33 miles per month and take a picture when you get to 700 miles of either you or the spot you reached the target or both if you want to. And if you go under or over 700 miles nobody will mind.

Join in the chat on the friendliest thread around - all things discussed and sometimes even some running is talked about.

Happy running :-)
