Whilst I'm sad that Wordle will almost certainly be paywalled, you can't blame the chap for selling up - and he's sold at its peak, smart move.

A new fad will be along soon enough.

I will be sad to see the end of the clones - especially Nerdle.

You can't copyright an idea. I think this was established (or restated) in a case involving an unauthorised NZ version of Opportunity Knocks, although that may have been specifically about TV show formats? It also explains why there are Monopoly clones out there like Chicago-opoly (used to be "Chicago in a Box") published by Late for the Sky, a completely different publisher.
