We feed ours mainly chicken wings. A bit of broccoli and carrot as a snack. Cheese for training rewards and a daily chew from the pet shop. They sometimes get Kong biscuits too. I think it works out cheaper than kibble. The dogs get human grade food. Smaller less smelly poos.

A chicken wing just a biscuit for Jess! She needs drumsticks at the least - otherwise there's the danger she won't chew. I LOVE seeing her chomp on chicken legs and the like ...CRUNCH CRUNCH with massive huge grin and soft eyes!

I might try introducing some raw food into Wanda's diet. She does get vegetables and carrot peelings etc from time to time but we fed her pretty much the same as she had at Battersea (on their advice) to keep her 'routine' when she left them. Now she has kibble with two forkfuls of tinned dog food stirred in so it's not just dry food. She seems to like it and she is always the picture of health but maybe I should give her a raw day or two a week perhaps? There was a link to a website that someone on this thread (I think it *may* have been Sharkie or LD) about manufactured dog food and how hideously awful it is which was a bit of a shocker to read... but Wanda doesn't have the *worst* one from that site and she seems to do all right on it. |

Hmmm. I've spent the last hour having a read around the subject. It sounds quite complicated! The benefits seem indisputable but it does sound a bit faffy and I wonder how we'd get on if we go on holiday, or if Charlie goes to stay with the dog sitter. Much easier to stick with the kibble. I like BBL's idea of mixing the 2. I wonder if there would be any benefits to having a half week raw food/ half week kibble diet? |

allaboutdogfood.co.uk I give Wainwrights Grain Free (4.4 out of 5). It works really well for Dexter, he now has normal poos (not runny) and his coat is fantastic. It's available at Pets at Home. I've tried to balance quality with cost which is why I've gone with a 4.4. His previous owner fed him Bakers which scored 0.1 out of 5 (and the dramatic difference in his coat and the lack of diarrhoea was evidence when I changed him over). Interestingly his previous owner also used to give him chicken but that massively upset his tummy. Does anyone know why that may be? Dexter gets tomatoes and cucumber as treats along with his veggie stick |

I've found an additional benefit of the very varied nature of Jess raw foo diet is that she 'will' eat almost anything - and very rarely gets any tummy upsets. Any she does have are over in a day - no vet's visits here. And GSDs are notoriously picky eaters and prone to allergies. There's no probem with a raw fed dog going onto kibble or tins for a few days - their robust immune systems can handle a brief change. Or so I've found. Jess' diet includes chicken, beef, salmon, turkey, duck, raw tripe (V V V GOOD!) lamb, pork (the least frequent) egg all raw. Quite a lot of veg because she likes it. Chicken is the most used because it's the cheapest! As I'm sure I've told you before she also occasionally treats herself to a fresh seafood lunch when we are on the beach. A whole crab. |
