Having only had adult dogs previously I was initially horrified by the idea of 'crates' - the term I first came across, and presume is what you mean. But I saw sense pretty quickly by applying a bit of lateral thinking.

You need to see the crate/cage as a safe den like place for the dog, somewhere they don't feel imprisoned in - more that it's their secure place. I'm pretty sure Helegant's Jet still uses one.

However it is definitely trickier for big dogs as they grow out of reasonably sized ones pretty quickly. Jess eventually started dragging her bedding out of the crate and stuck it int the middleof the kitchen floor - which remains one of her preferred lying positions. If you can afford it and have space in your kitchen a doggy playpen might be better.

I hadn't seen the comments on your blog when I wrote the above, winnie says similar to me but I think her dog is smallish. Bryony will need a bit of enticing in as she's older as well (bit younger than Wanda was however) Does your trainer advise it?

Ralph has a crate, which was his safe place and where he slept from the get go as his breeder used them, but the only time he uses it now is either on holiday so he's OK if we leave him alone in a cottage for an hour or so - or when he knows I have his ear drops in my hand.

Indoors he had the children's old wooden playpen until he started to eat it. outdoors I had a pen made from a series of metal gatey things - that's more useful now for stopping up holes in the fence/keeping cats off my seed bed, but was great when he was younger.

I was thinking of a crate for Charlie when we were having trouble getting him to bed at night and asked my vet their opinion on crate training dogs at a later stage - he was quite non commital, it works for some and not for others. (You don't say!) He had tried with his dog and failed, but also knew of other clients who had successfully managed to crate train older dogs. I didn't bother in the end.

I was interested by your comment about putting B on a lead when mouthing. Charlie is a blinkin nuisance with biting trouser bottoms/ankles. I'm trying to visualise how putting him on a lead might help when his mouth will still be free?

If Bryony is in a crate /playpen in the same room as you, D, she may not feel the need to bark.

We didn't have room for a playpen so treated the kitchen and downstairs hall as one big pen in a way by installing a baby gate (via our kind next door neighbours!) on the bottom stairs. But that was more for when we were out - I do think something in the same room as you might be good D.

These aren't useful and jess was only 9 weeks at this time - but they might raise a smile. Hedging her bets even then.
