May not be anything to worry about just yet especially if the vet wasn't concerned previously. See how it is in the morning if it doesn't seem to be causing a lot of concern tonight. If it does look worse in the morning maybe have a chat with them on the phone?

Our vet is quite good at replying to emails, that means we can send pics too- might be worth checking if that’s an option?

I’ve actually managed to get a pic tonight (was impossible last night - he’s too wriggly). It possibly looks a bit redder in the pic compared to real life but if they take pictures it might help. Thanks. I’ll see if I can give them a call tomorrow.

Wow! Great picture!

How do people know when they have sufficient recall to let their dogs off the lead? Also how have people practised/trained this.

I’m trying recall games and use treats and he’ll come running in the house, sometimes in the garden (if there’s not something more interesting) and it’s hard to even try outside (I have a long lead but not easy to use on your own and I got it all tangled up!)

Can you get someone to help you Pen? We trained Wanda by taking her to a (mainly) enclosed area with few other distractions and then we would stand opposite each other one would hold Wanda and let her go as the other one called her. When she reached the other person she got a high value treat (chicken or cheese) before having her lead clipped on and a second one for having the lead clipped on so she associated going back on the lead with a treat,

This worked very well - BUT the first time we properly let her off the lead on a walk in the countryside she chased a bird and took no notice of any recall!

We started with arlo and the whistle in the garden on the day we got him. We did have a long lead which we used once I think. We took a bit of a gamble that he would come back and on the first walk let him off but did it on the beach and on the hope that I would be faster than him if needed. For first few months would reward every time he returned.

First few times we made sure it was a big open space and was generally quiet.

Saying that, if he finds a dead bird or fish, then we may as well not exist to him. But he does come back to the whistle if he heads off to chase something alive.

Yes we started in the garden too, with *lots* of high value treats for a prompt recall. I remember our dog trainer at the classes we went to, stressing how the reward had to be instant. Also, when you're out in a field, to make sure you recall before the'point of no return' and they disappear after another dog or rabbit or whatever. This should get further away as they learn.

If they ignore you you have to make yourself the most interesting thing in the area and this may well mean jumping up and down, squealing, running around (especially *away* from where your puppy is) and generally making an idiot of yourself. Enjoy :-)

On the rare occasions I let Rory off the lead I use a long line (very thin, light lead but 5 or 10m long) - if necessary in an emergency you can stamp on the end of it. I’d only use it on a harness though - not on a collar.
