Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Rory will settle if I’m pottering around the house (he finds it particularly soothing when I’m doing the washing up), but he hates it if I’m sitting down. I should hire him out to people who want to gently increase their daily step count :-)

We taught Wanda down stay first where she is down but alert and waiting for the next command. We also taught 'mat' so she goes to the mat and waits for either sit or down whatever.

We taught settle in her bed first of all. When she was just lying in her bed and relaxed eg not anticipating a command we would stroke her and say settle and praise her.

Then if we sent her to a bed or mat and she lay down in a relaxed way rather than in an anticipating a command way we would praise her for settle.

That way she learned the difference for a down and a settle. I won't pretend she will remain in either position indefinitely but she knows settle is a short term for 'will you just lie down quietly, relax and shut up!'

This is mainly for Sharks but others may also be interested... I personally think its tragic that breeds are altered in this way.......

What's supposed to be the advantage of that, D2? The dogs in the recent pictures look like they're hard,y able to walk!

Sigh... what is wrong with breeding dogs that are fit for purpose? I know, I'm biased.

1960 is my 'idea' of a GSD because that's what my dog looked like - she was a pedigree from championship line. Did I mention she had to be euthanized because she had hip dysplasia? I thought the aim was to breed that out (rather like cocker rage), not exaggerate the features that make it more likely.

You can see the same variation if you look at Cocker Spaniels - 'show' (bred for appearance) and 'working' (bred for performance).

At least the article seems to suggest that it is not a requirement of the breed standard, even if dogs like that are winning. Hopefully it is something the Kennel Club will take action over at some point in the same way as they have done with various breeds overbreeding/conformation issues.

I’m intrigued by the idea of ‘cocker rage’
