I think we've probably all been there though Alice - and an 'out of control' bundle of white cuteness is probably more likely to be looked on in a forgiving way by those he is 'out of control' with than some other types of dog would be ![]() |

It's the cute fluffy ones you have to watch out for. They're clearly all a wee bit bonkers ![]() |

... and that's the rub! To change the subject slightly. I walked past a small, slightly mangy looking dog yesterday, on a lead, with an owner dressed for rough outdoor work. The man said, "It's OK, she won't bite you" (the thought hadn't entered my mind), and then said something along the lines of, "I've been bitten lots of times, dogs don't like me." It reminded me of the man who organises essexdogdisplayteam.org of rehabilitated dogs who said that the reason he had never been bitten is that dogs give around twenty signals before they bite, and he's learned to read and respect them. and... in a separate doggy conversation yesterday a lady who has owned both types of dogs repeated the adage that a Labrador is born half-trained and a Spaniel dies half-trained ![]() |

Only time I've ever been bitten, was out running on opposite side of road making escape from area, and dog bolted across road to get me. I stopped but it then decided to make running attacks.

I've heard the signals thing applied to horses too - if a horse is going to kick or bite, there's always a warning (there might not be that much time between the warning and the actual deed...) I guess it also applies to people - my friend used to employ someone who reliably ended up being punched every time he got drunk. I'm sure he was missing some signals too.

I was about to say I've never been bitten and then I remembered the VLF that ran out of a garden in Lanzarote and attached itself to my tracksuit trouser bottoms. It only caught a mouthful of fabric so technically it's true that I've never been bitten, but the intent was there.

The Essex Dog Display man probably does know what he is talking about - I've seen a few performances of theirs at local shows etc. Wanda met a 'young friend' today. He's a 14 month old spaniel and would appear to have just reached puberty. I didn't know that dogs could look appalled until I saw Wanda's face when he rolled over and indicated he was .... er... somewhat excited to see her. If a look could say 'young man put that away' it would have done. |
