There aren't that many women-only events, apart from Race for Life, but some women runners - especially beginners - do seem to feel more comfortable in that environment.

And Race for Life has certainly been responsible for getting lots of women into running/racing.

This person was barred from taking part in a sporting event on account of her gender.

Look what's happened since.

Seriously, are women genuinely made to feel uncomfortable by the actions of some men taking part in events? That needs clamping down on and dealing with, not a schism between female and mixed events to be created.

Aye, it beats me why you get men saying they want to put on lipstick and do R4L or women-only cyclo-cross events when they could ride in the TdF or become a bishop. Proper weird.

I don't mind female-only start waves, but I do object to not being allowed access to an event on account of something I have no control over.

Imagine, if you will, a white-only race on account of how some Africans are genetically predisposed to running more quickly than me.

I don't think it's that men in general do anything in particular to cause it, just that lots of women feel very self-conscious about running, what they look like, etc, and perhaps feel more comfortable in a women-only environment?

Not me, I have no shame.

No, DeeGee, I don't think it's the actions of men taking part in the events that make women feel uncomfortable. It's more likely to be that for pre-existing reasons they're intimidated by the idea of doing sport alongside men.

Race for life is great for getting women into running, don't get me wrong.

But how many, friendly, walk if you want, run if you want, go round with your friends and be made to feel like a winner beginners' 5k events are there for men who'd like to start running but will come in eight minutes after the last vest wearing "proper" athlete?

Some men have the same hang-ups as some women, you know...

Has anybody blamed the "sexism" in running on the Daily Mail yet?

No!? looks like a couple of you are slacking there.

Womens running/swimming or cycling groups are a great idea, can't see a problem with them. Whatever gets folk out there & exercising is all good.

D'you know, if there really is a need for men to be able to sign up for and participate in entry-level sports events in a men-only environment, I'm all in favour of such events being set up.

And would be just as pleased if elite sports organisations were obliged to devote equal resources to male and female teams/competitors.

it looks like you've found a market there, deegee. now you just need to find someone to run the events :)

it is a shame that there is a need for women-only events. but a lot of it is women feeling that they are being judged by men on their physical appearance and lycra only looks good on a small percentage of the population. so events where they don't need to worry about that means that they can gain in confidence. most of them probably move on to mixed events anyway.

personally, i couldn't give a monkey's if someone looks askance at the sight of me in lycra. if they're that shallow i'm not interested in their opinion.
