Telephone Preference Service works wonders for the salesmen. You get fewer calls, but should you still get a sales call, you just have to mention that you registered with the TPS and they start apologising straight away and hang up.
Do the Mail Preference Service at the same time, and you'll probably save about a sackload of mail each week too. I know I did.
