But the phrase originates from "if you think (whatever) you've got another think coming".
Why would it be "thing", it makes no sense :-)

Mmmm. Not sure, "thing coming" literally makes no sense once you realise.

I can't remember when I had my own lightbulb moment with it, and so I'm not surprised there's such a split between the correct (!!) / incorrect use. But - for me - the incorrect use is simply because of so much use rather than being an alternative.

I don't get too hung up about it, it's more the different reactions I find most fun.

On the one hand: Americans in can’t speak English properly shocker

On the other: English is a living language and evolves

For what it’s worth, I will die on the hill of pedantry and “thing” grinds my gears, as the kids say these days (or not)

Yes. Totally agree that languages evolve. But yes, agree, "thing" literally makes no sense. It's not evolution in this case rather an understandable abuse.

To split your infinitives or not to do is evolution.

Or starting your sentences with conjunctions and prepositions.

I even don't mind the use of emojis as an evolving language.

People always throw the language evolves line in, but a lot of these cases are laziness and errors.

Things like so many people saying could of, instead of could have, because of how it sounds and fewer letters to write out.

My pal has a weird one, he always writes "exacty" instead of exactly. Saves him one letter!

Could have / could of an excellent counter-argument. Defiantly, instead of definitely, another that boils my piss!

It does make sense: if you think one thing and that turns out to be incorrect then you have another thing coming, as in a new thing to consider.

It's the think about the thing. But nice try.
